Why The Beatles Visited This Ashram In Rishikesh

Also known as the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi ashram, it is located in a corner of Rajaji National Park with the river Ganga flowing quietly behind it. In 1968, the Beatles came here to find solace and meditate quietly without the world of chaos and attention.

After a few years of limelight, the Ashram has again regained its seclusion, and very few know of it. This has helped maintain the necessary isolation to make it a haven of serenity.

Beatles came here to learn transcendental meditation from the Maharishi in 1968. Later Beatles accepted Maharishi Mahesh Yogi as their Guru and became their disciples. Even George Harrison also arranged music concert for benefit of Natural law party which was associated with Maharishi.

But meditation is not the only reason to visit this Ashram. It holds many other treasures. Painters will get inspired with the graffiti and life size paintings on the walls in the Ashram. All the paintings are painted by the various artists of the world under the community The Beatles Cathedral Gallery.

Being surrounded by a national park, the Ashram is set amidst flush green landscapes. The walks through the forest trails make it more enchanting. It is also a paradise for wildlife photographers and birders.

As you enter the vicinity of the Ashram, hobbit like huts and small caves greet you. These were places for meditation, now in a decaying state. But the view of the Ganga is great. Also, the place is frequented so less by other tourists, that you could walks for miles near the Ashram without meeting another soul. This makes the stay more enchanting for those who seek peace and quiet.

In Rishikesh, you have to cross the Gange at Ram Jhula crossing, and leave the main road at Gita Bhawan, to continue walking till you reach the entrance.

The Ashram is officially closed, but you can visit it for a peaceful adventure.
