If you ever plan to drive from Manali to Ladakh, most people suggest a stopover at Sarchu. This place has beautiful tents and comfortable amenities. But it can get quite crowded. And if you are looking for an alternative, then Jispa is an ideal place.

Actually, Jispa deserved being a destination in its own right. It turns into a quiet village at night, with stars twinkling above your head, and the sound of the river Bhaga lulling you to sleep. If you are tired of the city din, then head here to get a refreshing break.

You not only have the river, originating from the Baralachala Pass a few hours drive further on, but the surrounding peaks covered with mist and clouds creating a postcard picture look. Step out early morning for a walk with a drizzle on your face, and soak in the rich greenery around.

As common all over Ladakh, Jispa too has some Buddhist chortens and stupas, conveying a sense of serenity. Buddhist flags fluttering all over. And then there are the Ladakhi style steps cut on a log of tree that promise to be a stairway to heaven if you can climb these without support.

You can walk through the local village market, where you can buy the Ladakhi souvenirs and handicrafts at a much lower price than other more crowded destinations. You can also visit the Jispa Rural Museum housing reminders of the history and way of life of the residents of the Tod Valley of the Lahaul district.

There are not many options for accommodation here, except Hotel Ibex and Padma Lodge. But then here in lies the beauty of this place. It has been left alone by commercial tour operators. You can also book a tent by Jispa Journeys.

You can visit Jispa throughout the year, but winters tend to get really chilly. The best way to reach Jispa is by driving from Manali via Rohtang Pass. Leave early to avoid the traffic snarls near the pass.

If you want to enjoy the peaceful serenity of the Himalayan mountains, without much ado and activity, then Jispa is a great destination to revitalise your senses.
