Common Salt or Sodium Chloride is the commonest kitchen ingredient with an array of health uses apart from its application in regular cooking. Salt sustains the fluid content inside and outside the blood cells; it sends signals to the nerves and muscles. Dietary salt is available in various forms: unrefined, refined (table salt) and iodine-fortified salt. Unrefined salt happens to be the healthiest of them all and the world is slowly realizing this.

What are the health uses of common salt?

    • Add half a teaspoon of salt, 2 pinches of pure turmeric powder to a glass of water, bring the water to a rolling boil and use the mixture for gargling when comfortably warm. This helps in cases of tonsillitis in children, sore throat, throat infection and cough.

    • Add a pinch of salt to a teaspoon of sesame oil, massage your gums and rub the mixture over your teeth gently for about 2-3 minutes. Make sure to not hurt your gums. This is an effective way of dealing with sensitive teeth. This method also deep cleanses the teeth reducing the occurrence of cavities. Mustard oil is also known to strengthen teeth and prevent loose teeth from falling out hence sesame oil can be replaced by mustard oil too.
    • In case an insect enters the ear, salt water is instilled into the ear. This forces the insect out of the ear.
    • Salt water baths help in boosting mental health. Bathing in salt water relieves mental stress, physical strain and leaves you feeling more calm, happy and relaxed. Bath salts act as wonderful stress busters.

      • In case of nasal congestion, 5 gms of salt is dissolved in 50 ml water and filtered. This is to be instilled in both nostrils by the Jalaneti method in case of nasal congestion. This helps relieve headache too.

Less or excessive intake of salt, both have its respective consequences thus one should be aware of both. In case of consumption, the daily intake of salt should not go beyond 1 teaspoon per day. A high-salt diet increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Ayurveda has explained that the excessive use of salt can cause impairment of sense organs, decrease fertility, provoke pitta and cause dislodging of teeth. To maintain a healthy body, one, therefore, needs to be extremely cautious about its consumption.
