Already an acclaimed classical dancer, Madhuri went on to become one of Bollywood’s most treasured stars as she is today. Starting her career with the 1984 movie Abodh, she went through a brief period of insignificant movies before her first evident recognition came through the 1988 movie Tezaab, the highest grossing movie of that year. The movie even bagged her a Filmfare nomination. But this was just the beginning.

In 1994 her career reached yet another peak with the movie Hum Aapke Hain Kaun which went on to become one of the biggest hits in the history of Hindi cinema. This movie is perhaps the biggest milestone of Dixit’s career as well, as it also made her one of the highest paid actresses in the 90s and made a whooping 1 million pounds in the UK market, a record that is yet to be broken by any other Hindi movie.

Following Hum Apke, she went on doing several critically acclaimed as well as commercially successful movies, Yash Chopra’s 1997 romantic film Dil Toh Pagal Hain being the most prominent one of them. The movie earned her the fourth Filmfare Award for Best Actress of her career. In 2002, Madhuri mesmerized the audience yet again with both her dance and acting in her portrayal of Chandramukhi, a courtesan, in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas. And this won her a Filmfare award for the Best Supporting Actress.

Post Devdas however she took a hiatus from acting and returned to the movie screens with Aaja Nachle in 2007. The movie’s commercial failure could not stop critics from praising her performance. But they were not swept off of their feet until Dedh Ishqiya came out in 2014, where Madhuri’s portrayal of a con woman earned her not only critical acclamations but also her 14th Best Actress nomination at Filmfare. Her last appearance on the silver screen as an actress was in Gulaab Gang alongside Juhi Chawla, in 2014, where she portrayed the role of the leader of an all-women vigilante group. However, in between these movies, she appeared in a song sequence “Ghaghra” in the 2013 movie Yeh Jawaani Hain Deewani and won several hearts.
