Indian cinema have definitely made a mark on international platforms and BAFTA nominations are testimony to that. From Indian actors to movies, there’s been several nominations. Here are a few iconic Bollywood actors and movies that were nominated at the BAFTA awards:

Anupam Kher For The Boy With The Topknot – BAFTA 2018

Anupam Kher has been nominated for the prestigious BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts)award for his role as a supporting actor in BBC TV movie The Boy With The Topknot (2017). He plays the role of a schizophrenic father in the film. It threw Bollywood in a tizzy and several celebrities, including Priyanka Chopra, Anil Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor and others congratulated him over tweets for having earned the nomination. The movie revolves around the family and growing up of a British Sikh.

But this isn’t the first of occasions that a Bollywood film or actor has made India proud at the global level. Here are some of the others which have been nominated for a BAFTA.

Irrfan Khan starrer, Lunchbox (2013), was a heart-warming tale was nominated for the non-English best film category at BAFTA in 2015. Centered on the famous ‘dabbawallahs’ of Mumbai, it was a tale of friendship developed through notes between two strangers. The exchange occurs due to mistaken delivery of the dabba from a housewife to an about to retire government official played by Irrfan Khan.

Life of Pi (2012) actor Suraj Sharma was also nominated for a BAFTA in the category of “Rising star”. The 19 year old was the protagonist of the fantasy adventure movie based on Yann Martel’s book by the same name. He was then studying and was the only male actor to have been nominated in that category. The nomination spoke of the immense talent and zeal that he displayed as the movie was very well received by critics and audiences alike.

This late veteran actor was nominated for a BAFTA for his awesome role as George Khan in the movie East is East (1999). He starred alongside famous actors and was critically acclaimed for his role. The movie even had a sequel called West is West. His co-stars mourned his loss after he passed away in 2017.

Indian films have often been the pioneers of good acting, direction and more. Nominations like these bring to the forefront movies which deserve the fame and recognition.
