The process of changing people’s minds is not a simple one. You cannot simply lay down the facts and expect the people to get convinced. Believe it or not, the “fact” is that facts do not change minds. Changing minds is about playing with people’s beliefs and facts do not change someone’s belief, it only creates further resistance. You cannot directly change someone’s belief. You must remember that “pressure creates resistance”. When the mind is already made up, when the mind already has a set of beliefs, you have to take a better and more effective approach to bring a change.

Acceptance Creates Flexibility

While “pressure creates resistance”, acceptance creates flexibility. Begin by validating their beliefs. In the game of persuasion, you must first find the common ground. The ground, where your subject feels comfortable and relaxed! In order to find this ground, you need to show that you understand their views, beliefs, and opinions. Do not directly attack them with your beliefs and start the process of changing their minds. This will be completely counterproductive. Instead, first allow your subject to get flexible by validating their beliefs. Then, you can start your game.

Starting The Game

The game is simple. You have to slowly and gradually make them see the shortcomings of their set of beliefs. You must attack the very foundation of their beliefs by stating flaws in the very logic and reasoning behind it. The best approach of playing this game is simply asking the right questions. DO not tell your customer that Xyz Company doesn’t provide you with a 10-year guarantee. Ask them, “How many years of guarantee does Xyz Company provide?” This way, it doesn’t feel like an attack but a genuine deliberation.

Now that you have started playing the game and weakened the connections with their existing set of beliefs, it is time to reconnect their belief to the viewpoint that you endorse. Show them all the benefits and advantages of this new set of beliefs. Show them the logic and the reasoning behind it in positive light. Help them truly reconnect!

Now all you did is present different conclusions and analysis to your prospective client/customer/associate. You did not suggest anything. You did not attack any belief. All you did is earned their support.
