Richa Maheshwari, An Award Winning Fashion Photographer, Shares The Tricks To Her Trade

Richa Maheshwari was an excellent student in school. Despite scoring 96.3% in her Twelfth Board exams and despite the pressure on her to take up some heavy academic course, she knew then itself that her calling lay in the fields of arts and creatives. And now, with many National Awards and other accolades, she has validated her unconventional choice.

Richa says, “I dropped a year after my high school. And got admitted into the prestigious National Institute of Fashion Technology in Delhi. I scored an All India rank of 16 and specialised in Fashion Communication. It was at this time that a professor recognised my talent in photography during a course assignment. I am a self-taught photographer. I began reading everything I could find on camera equipment, and began my own research.”

During her third year, Richa started freelancing. By the end of the course, while others were looking for a job placement, Richa had already set up her studio. She says, “My family is extremely supportive, and they gave me a free hand to follow my passion. But I faced many obstacles in the industry. As I was already freelancing, I would not get internships as they would be insecure about their clients with me. Fashion photography is still a male-dominated bastion, and I worked my way without a Godfather. When I began there were only a few established photographers, and the rest of us were seen as struggling amateurs. I even had moments of self-doubt about being able to sustain myself in the industry, but I overcame them all. It was like saving yourself from a rapid wildfire. I struggled to find my own niche.”

Richa feels that technological advancements and social media have ensured that now photography is looked upon as a serious career option. She says, “There is increasing acceptance of this choice. And the availability of cheaper equipment has also helped this. But if you want to make a career in fashion photography, you still have to study fashion. You need to have a strong foundation in the field. You have to read a lot and justify yourself. These days many upstarts claim such titles, but only the ones who know their work genuinely succeed. You have to know the current trends as well as the history of art. And when it comes to photography in general, the basic rule is not to abide by rules. You cannot constrict yourself and neither can art be defined by rules. So, keep experimenting, keep innovating and keep practicing. Travel a lot and see for inspirations in details.”
