A lot has been said, discussed, and written about keeping your personal and professional life apart. People usually advice you against dating anyone inside your workspace, leave alone your BOSS! So yes, it is a big deal. And if you decide to go for it, it is not going to be easy. But when has something nice come out of something easy? If this is really what you want, you can make it work. Just keep in mind few golden rules of dating your boss.

Rule Number 1 – Don’t

It says “Like a boss”. It doesn’t say to like your boss. Come on?

I don’t want you to say that I never warned you against it. So, here it is. If you still can, abort the mission! Don’t date your boss! It is almost never a good idea. The most dreaded consequence of this decision can be you being forced to leave the job, either emotionally or professionally. Irrespective of where the pressure comes from, you are going to take the hit! And even if you make it work and keep your jobs, it will never be the same. Coworkers will gossip about you, the boss will be accused of favoritism, you will always be seen with the eyes of suspicion and so on. In simple words, if you are going to date your boss, it’s time to start looking for another job!

Rule Number 2 – You Are An Equal And You Are Not

Now that you have classically ignored my rule number 1, here is the most important rule of all. It’s going to be super difficult but you have to find a way of developing multiple personality. Yeah, I am not kidding. That’s the only way to keep your personal and professional life apart. At work, you have to remember you are NOT an equal and you must respect your boss’ orders. While not at work, in personal life you must remember to take your stand and realize that you are in fact an equal. I know it’s confusing but hey, you knew what you signed up for! Drawing that line and developing two personalities should be your first step.

Rule Number 3 – Do Not Let It Affect Your Performance

If your performance shows even a minute negative change, get ready for all the criticism and comments.

No, of course I am not talking about your performance on bed. It is important too but it’s a different discussion. You must maintain your work performance. You must keep achieving your targets without getting any favors or preferential treatment. If you maintain your performance or better even, improve it, nobody will be able to point fingers at you! The bottom-line is that you can do whatever you want as long as you are getting the desired results for the company. This will not only save your relationship but also save you from undue criticism.

Another important understanding you need to have with you date (your boss) is of post break-up scenario. If you don’t do that, your boss can potentially make the workspace a living hell for you. And even if your boss doesn’t do anything like that, there is going to be undeniable awkwardness. You can avoid such circumstances by having an agreement of sort. All the best!
