BJP beats Sena in BMC by-election; narrows gap
The BJP narrowed its tally gap with Shiv Sena in the Mumbai civic body as its nominee today won the BMC by poll from Bhandup, beating the bickering ally’s candidate by 4,792 votes.
The BJP candidate, Jagruti Patel, polled 11,129 votes in ward no. 116, while the Sena nominee, Minakshi Patil, got 6,337 votes, an official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.
The by-election was necessitated after the death of Congress corporator Pramila Patil on April 25. With the latest victory, the BJP’s tally in the 227-member BMC has risen to 82, while that of the Sena remains at 84.
Congress sweeps Nanded civic polls; stops BJP juggernaut
The Congress today made a clean sweep in the Nanded-Waghala municipal corporation elections, winning 49 of the 54 seats for which results were declared.
Results for 54 seats, out of the total 81, have been declared so far.
Nanded is Maharashtra Congress president Ashok Chavan’s home turf and it saw an aggressive campaign, with BJP making all efforts to wrest control of the civic body.
EC announces dates for Himachal Pradesh Elections
The Election Commission has announced elections to the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assemblies this evening.
While the term of the 182-member Gujarat Assembly ends on January 22, the term of the 68-member HP Assembly ends on January 7.
Poll process in Himachal Pradesh will start on October 16 with issue of notification; last date for filing nominations is Oct 23, CEC announced.
The poll schedule has been planned such that Himachal result does not impact Gujarat elections.
Schedule for Gujarat assembly elections will be announced soon, but polls would be held there before Dec 18.
