Now that we’re entering the 71st year of Indian Independence, the patriot in us craves to listen to the patriotic songs that celebrate our freedom with us. One of the first Bollywood songs to explore the topic of love and respect for the country was the iconic “Vande Mataram” written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1882, later used in Hemen Gupta’s historical-patriotic movie “Anand Math” (1952). In the subsequent years, Bollywood has continued to bless us with new songs and keep us the streak of patriotism alive in us. Here are five of the best patriotic songs of the decade.
“Aye Watan” From Raazi (2018)
‘Raazi’ was well-received as a patriotic movie, where Alia Bhatt is married to a Pakistani army officer as an undercover spy during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war. “Aye Watan” has been released in both male and female versions, sung by Arijit Singh and Sunidhi Chauhan respectively. The song is a tribute to our country, where we promise to protect our motherland from all troubles and keep it flourishing forever.
“Shubh Din” From Parmanu (2018)
Sung by Keerthi Sagathia and Jyotica Tangri, “Shubh Din” celebrates India’s greatest military achievement – its journey from testing nuclear bomb test explosions to finally becoming a nuclear state in 1998. Tinged with Rajasthani folk elements, the song takes us through how the Indian army officers equip Pokhran (in Rajasthan) to make it a missile testing site.
“Jaaga Hindustan” From Gold (2018)
“Jaaga Hindustan” speaks of our wish to see our motherland as our life and home, the respect that we feel for our ‘tiranga’, and the desire to do something worthwhile for our country. Sung by Yasser Desai, the song likens our country to our own mother and a source of protection and shelter against our enemies. You will love the music background score as well, which will fill your heart with pride for our nation.
“India Waale” From Happy New Year (2014)
A party song with an underlying sense of patriotism, this glitzy electro-pop-disco song shows us what Indians are capable of – if only we have set our hearts to it. Vishal Dadlani, Shankar Mahadevan, KK and Neeti Mohan were the singers, and they did a good job in maintaining the energy of the song, mixed with a little romance between SRK and Deepika Padukone in the middle.
“Salaam India” From Mary Kom (2014)
One of the most powerful songs sung by Vishal Dadlani and Salim Merchant, this is about Mary Kom’s return to professional boxing after motherhood, just for her country. Though Priyanka’s stellar performance is incomparable, can we imagine ever the look of pride and happiness on the real Mary Kom’s face when she saw the National Flag being raised after winning the 2008 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship?
Some gritty, some heart-wrenching, Bollywood has done a great job in exploring patriotism from different angles – right from the battlefield, sports, international competitions and tournaments to military achievements – giving us all the right reasons to be proud as an Indian.
