Shilpa Rao is one of the top female playback singers who has been part of many superhit songs in Bollywood. Born in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, she got her first big movie break when music composer Mithoon approached her to sing the song “Tose Naina” for the movie “Anwar” in 2007. She rose to fame with her rendition for the song “Khuda Jaane” from Bachna Ae Haseeno and began getting for offers to sing for movies. Rao loves to experiment with her voice according to the occasion, and considers her father to be her musical inspiration. Here’s a list of her best songs, where she has experimented with different genres as well.
“Bulleya” From Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016)
Apart from an utterly gorgeous Aishwarya Rai-Ranbir Kapoor pairing, “Bulleya” was noted for its lyric quality and vocals. Shilpa Rao was greatly appreciated for her voice and the emotions that she portrayed into the song. Sung along with Amit Mishra, she managed to retain her short presence into the song. Did you know that she was nominated for the Mirchi Music Awards for the Female Vocalist of the Year for this song?
“Allah Maaf Kare” From Desi Boyz (2011)
Though Rao is mainly known for her soulful songs, “Allah Maaf Kare” is a fun and light-hearted love song with Akshay Kumar and Chaitrangada Singh in the lead roles. She has sung the song with an open and happy voice, which is quite different from what we’ve been used to from her.
“Malang” From Dhoom 3 (2013)
A song performed on a grand scale, the combination of Siddhartha Mahadevan and Shilpa Rao have taken the dance to a whole new level. Though we couldn’t take our eyes off from Katrina Kaif’s out-of-the-world outfits, we can guarantee you that Rao’s soft yet powerful voice has definitely changed our perception towards her.
“Meherbaan” From Bang Bang (2014)
Ash King, Shilpa Rao, and Shekhar Rajvijani perfectly complemented each other in this sizzling romantic song. Rao’s vocals were on point as she expressed Katrina’s on-screen attraction towards Hrithik Roshan, and the rest was history.
“Ishq Shava” From Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2013)
A song of love and passion, Katrina Kaif and SRK were absolutely brilliant in this song. Rao’s voice shone out like a star and taught us that she is in Bollywood to stay and slay.
Shilpa Rao has truly made a mark in the Bollywood music industry due to her unusual voice and experimentation in each song. We would love to see her in many more songs so that she explores her art even more.
