It is a well-known fact in the Bollywood industry that their playback singers gain much less popularity as artists or stars than their actors. Several different factors go into this unequal recognition but there are a few names in the list of Bollywood singers like Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan, Arijit Singh who broke through the barrier and are as well-known as any famous Bollywood movie star. However, not everyone is as fortunate and there are some singers, who despite being amazing artists do not get the recognition they deserve.
Here are five such Bollywood singers who did not gain much fame:
Abhijeet Sawant – The First Indian Idol
The first ‘Indian Idol’ Abhijit Sawant has been in and out of spotlight since 2005. Apart from releasing two independent albums, he also rendered a few songs in Bollywood movies, starting with Marjawan Mitjawan for the movie Aashiq Banaya Aapne (2005). But since then, he has pretty much been forgotten by the Indian audience.
Sreerama Chandra – The Indian Idol Of 2010
Sreerama Chnadra Mynampati, better known as Sreeram, is the winner of 2010 Indian Idol who debuted his playback singing career in the Telegu movie industry. In 2013, his Bollywood debut with his song Subhanallah from the movie Yeh Jawaani Hain Deewani was pretty famous. However, Sreeram still has a long way to go in terms of fame.
Payal Dev Of The Bajirao Fame
The most remarkable and well accepted rendition that Payal Dev has accomplished is perhaps the song Ab Tohe Jaane Na Doongi from the 2015 period fantasy film Bajiraao Mastani. Even though she has playbacked a few other Bollywood songs as well, given her talent, the acknowledgement has not been at par.
Shakthisree Gopalan – The Talented Musician
Apart from being a singer, Shakthisree Gopalan is also a songwriter and performer and has already collaborated with maestros of the Indian music industry, including A R Rahman, for the title track of Jab Tak Hain Jaan, the 2012 Yash Raj movie. Gopalan is known mostly for her contribution to the independent music scene in India. Yet, she hardly gets the appreciation and recognition that an exceptional voice like hers should get.
Parthiv Gohil – The Classical Singer
A remarkable vocalist trained in the tradition of Indian Classical music, it is genuinely sad how underrated Parthiv Gohil is in the Bollywood music industry. He has lent his voice for a few soulful songs including Yoon Shabnami and Daras Bina Nahi Chain, both from the 2007 movie Saawariya.
For the singers in Bollywood, the disparity of recognition has been somewhat a perpetual issue, save a few icons. Nevertheless, slowly but surely times are changing and now with the popularity of digital platforms like YouTube or other streaming apps, one can hope that singers will get their fair share of acknowledgement from their audiences soon.
