As the 72nd Independence Day of India is here, the country is prepping up to celebrate the day in various ways. From performances to writings to songs or social projects, Indians are getting ready to show their love for the country, to proudly flutter the tricolored flag high up above. On this day, we also remember the history of our struggle for freedom from the colonizers, and we honor the brave freedom fighters who gave up their lives to free the country from the British rule. But along with our historical heroes, it is very important that we do not forget our living heroes who are sacrificing their lives both literally and metaphorically, every waking hour, in order to protect us and this country.

While we sit in that restaurant to have a holiday dinner with our families, ordering from that “Independence Day Special” menu, our Jawans are surviving on gross meals, and ungodly hours of sleep, yet hardly budging from their duties. Gratefulness is too much of an understatement to express what we, the civilians owe to them. But even the smallest gestures can carry the biggest meanings. And that is what Social, a chain of restaurants across India, has kept in mind while creating a unique initiative for us to be able to thank our soldiers. On their Instagram page, the restaurant shared the details about their beautiful endeavor through a post, which read “Mark India’s 72nd Independence Day to write a personal note expressing your gratitude to our troops. This unique campaign is named #SocialToSoldiers, and through this campaign, the restaurant chain wishes to encourage “patrons to write a personal note expressing their thanks” to those risking their lives at the borders to keep us safe. This is a collective endeavor with Battees, a letter writing collective.

The postcards have been thoughtfully designed featuring the headlines of The Times Of India of 15th August 1947. All thank you notes will be sent to the office of the Ministry Of Defence on 16th August and these might make the soldiers smile and feel recognised, by fellow countrymen.
Even if we may not be able to pay them back equally for their sacrificial services towards the country, it is really crucial that we let our defence forces know that we see them, we remember them and most importantly, we are grateful.
