So many political stalwarts have come and gone, some contributing to India’s overall growth and some corrupt jesters who flatter themselves by calling themselves politicians. Now you can side with either. The choice is always yours. Having said that, we know that there are good politicians, there are great politicians and then there is Shyama Prasad Mookerjee. Under Nehru’s cabinet, he was appointed as the minister for industry and supply from which he went on to becoming the founder of the then Bharatiya Jana Sangh after quitting the Indian National Congress. Now whether that was a good action or not is for you to decide, but that changed the course of Indian history and the fate of our now Prime Minister.

Shyama Prasad Mookerjee is the hero every Gotham needs. He was one of the few who was strongly opposed to Article 370 of the constitution perhaps foreseeing the chaos and anarchy it will raise in not just Kashmir but all over the world. It is his efforts which made possible the integration of Kashmir into the country, in whatever twisted way you may perceive the term in. On the occasion of his birth anniversary, the world comes together to celebrate the free spirited and far sighted person that he was, including Narendra Modi. Without S.P Mookerjee’s contribution, BJP would have been another minor party which meets weekly to discuss cricket over chai and whose aim in life is to get the 2-hour long afternoon nap without any interruption. Clearly, BJP is a lot more than that, or at least we hope it is.

We often celebrate our freedom fighters and politicians who were heading the struggle for independence that we neglect the contributions of other just as important people. S.P Mookerjee played a key function in India’s independence movement and was a real badass rebel who resigned from his position of as the finance minister of the Bengal province. He organized popular support with the aid of organizations like the Mahabodhi Society, Marwari Relief Society, and Ramakrishna Mission. He became the president of the Hindu Mahasabha. BJP rightly calls the man its “guiding lights”.

He was a visionary stalwart, who changed the face of politics in India for ever. All leaders are commemorating him today because they know something that is just as obvious to you as well, your politicians can be cool, but they will never be S.P Mookerjee cool!
