Since the first man invented fire in his cave, humans have been a competitive creature. The other animals live by their instinct. Lions kill because their genes are so designed. Peacocks dance because their brains are so wired. Humans are the only creatures who have evolved to such degrees that they are driven less by nature, and more by their drive to conquer the forces of nature.

And if this rhetoric seems impassable to some, then here’s the proof of it. World Wildlife Fund’s ‘Living Planet’ report has acknowledged that 60 percent of animal life has been vanquished in the last 44 years. And this number is mind-boggling if you know that before a few hundred years, animals dominated the planet, and humans were only one of the other dominating creatures.

But now man has evolved so much that he is blurring lines with machines, and ensuring that the earth becomes uninhabitable for any other living being.

Whales and other beautiful marine creatures are washed up dead on shores. And yet man continues to pollute the oceans. In the Pacific Ocean, garbage is accumulating in alarming quantities. The patch of detritus is more than twice the size of France and is up to 16 times larger than previously estimated.

Remember Sudan? The last male white rhino that died this year. He was the epitome of what human greed for material possessions is doing to the natural world. While powerful countries play politics at the Paris Climate Summit, global warming is reaching alarming levels. Earth’s polar regions are warming twice as fast as the average rate of the planet.

And this is the tragic condition not only in isolated natural landscapes. Consider the smog in Delhi, the polluted rivers and lakes due to agriculture and industrial runoff. The closer a place is to humans, the dirtier it is. We have even littered pristine places with plastic.

Hence, there will soon be a time when humans will congratulate themselves on managing to kill every other life form, and ruling the earth for themselves.
