English isn’t our native language. Yet we try to grasp the language in all its true self! Indians have their own way of speaking English; of course, the pronunciations are neither British nor American but somewhat a mixture of both. But, there are words which have a definite pronunciation and cannot be twisted in any form whatsoever. But when an Indian pronounces those same words, the pronunciation often sounds crooked to the point of completely changing the words and its spelling.

You might be wondering which are the words which experience this fate. Here is the list of words which Indians often pronounce wrong, but thanks to Google, YouTube and our social media friends from abroad, we now know the correct pronunciations of them:

Dengue: Well, ‘tis the season for this disease, so why not start with learning how to pronounce this correctly? This pronunciation is ‘Deng-ee’ and not ‘Den-goo’ as we have learnt from our family members!

Schedule: Aha, you might be wondering that you are not wrong with this! Let’s see. Do you pronounce it like ‘Shey-dyul’? Then you indeed, are wrong. The pronunciation is ‘Ske-dule’!

Salon: You’ve often heard Aishwarya Rai Bachchan pronouncing this as ‘Sa-lohn’, and let me tell you, she is absolutely right! It isn’t ‘Suh-loon’, guys!

Cocoa: The ‘a’ is silent, remember this. The correct pronunciation is ‘Cocoh’ and not ‘Co-co-wa’.

Meme: To all the meme enthusiasts out there, you might have been mis-pronouncing this all this while. The pronunciation for this is ‘Me-eem’ and not ‘Mey-mey’!

Bowl: Well, the pronunciation for this is ‘Boh-l’ and not ‘Ba-ul’! ‘Ba-ul’ in Bengali denotes folk singers who sing with the instrument called the ‘iktara’!

Almond: The ‘l’ in this word is silent! So next time when you say ‘Almond’, spell it well!

Zebra: The ‘Z’ in ‘Zebra’ is pronounced as ‘Zee’ which provides it with a heavy pronunciation. So, the pronunciation is ‘Zee-bra’ and not ‘Zeb-brah’!

Poem: This is spelled terribly wrong. The correct pronunciation is ‘poe-um’ and never, I repeat, never, ‘po-emm’!

Pronunciation: How did we forget this word itself? The spelling is ‘Pronunciation’ and not ‘Pronounciation’ which changes the structure of the word too! So, don’t add the extra ‘ou’ while pronouncing this word next time onwards.

Well, these are the main words which are often mispronounced. You need to be extra careful while pronouncing these lest you should be called the ‘mis-speller’ of your group!
