Nimrat Kaur And Her Unconventional Choice Of Roles

A look at the diverse and iconic characters played by Nimrat Kaur

Nimrat Kaur And Her Unconventional Choice Of Roles

Bollywood has seen so many actors who defy and define the term unconventional. Starting from Konkona Sen Sharma to Radhika Apte, women in B-town have contributed majorly to the art of unconventional roles. Nimrat Kaur is one such familiar name. The actress has created not ripples but waves with her acting in movies, Television/web series/short films and endorsements. She has done it all and is yet to explore so much more. She made her debut in an English film called One Night With The King with a minor role and the rest is history. As she celebrates her 36th birthday today (13th March, 2018), let’s check out a list of iconic roles that Nimrat Kaur pulled off with ease and style:

The Cadbury Dairy Milk Silk commercial

This was perhaps for the first time that a woman stuck in a car in a chaotic traffic jam made it look so seductive. From the driver’s seat, she stares at you and licks the chocolate off her fingers trying to persuade you to try some with the iconic “I can read your lips on my fingertips” song playing in the background. Who’d be able to resist that ?! This commercial did it for Nimrat and established her as a force to reckon with.

The role of the dotting housewife is not new. She is perhaps a modern-day Charulata, portraying marital angst and urban frustration who is longing for love amongst a generation that has clearly forgotten to do the same. She takes “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” too literally and packs away delicious food to catch her husband’s attention when she meets Saajan. It is anchored in harsh socio-economic realities and instead of following the models of conventional romantic dramas Ritesh Batra has done a wonderful job keeping the end ambiguous which gives it a dark compelling edge.

Although Akshay Kumar is hailed as the protagonist of this movie and he has done a brilliant job, Nimrat deserves to steal the show. The tale of heroism that wishes to portray would be impossible to achieve had it not been for Nimrat. Ranjit’s relationship with wife Amrita is strained with time and stress. Her scene with Prakash Belavadi where she is seen confronting him will throw you off your seats. Airlift remains one unconventional movie that is surely segregated from the usual commercial movies of Bollywood.

Nimrat is the main protagonist in The Test Case

Anurag Kashyap’s Peddlers starring Nimrat Kaur and Gulshan Devaiah, Kriti Malhotra and Nishikant Kamat was screened at the Cannes film festival in 2012. Her fame is not confined to home alone. She also played the role of Tasneem Qureshi in the fourth season of Homeland: an American Television series. She also played the character of Rebecca Yedlin in the second season of wayward pines. She is also appearing in a Hindi web series called The Test Case directed by Vinay Waikul and Nagesh Kukunoor where she is seen yet again breaking free from stereotypical roles assigned to women.

Nimrat Kaur remains an unwavering spirit in Bollywood. She pulls of the unconventional roles with style and comfort. We wish her a very happy birthday and best of luck for all her upcoming ventures.
