Mirzapur that is soon to be aired on Amazon Prime Original Series is creating quite a buzz. Mirzapur is touted to be a perfect gangster drama about politics, love, and greed that’s full of dark humor and violence.
The web series, stars Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Vikrant Massey, Divyendu Sharma, Amit Sial, Shweta Tripathi, Shriya Pilgaonkar and Rasika Duggal among others. While trailer gave us a sneak peek into the world of Mirzapur which is run by Kaleen Bhaiya (Pankaj) and violence is the norm. Kaleen Bhaiya’s son Munna (Divyendu Sharma) wants to inherit his father’s authority. Munna’s run-in with Guddu and Bablu (played by Ali Fazal and Vikrant Massey) disturbs the equilibrium that Kaleen has established in the city.
At a press conference to launch the song of Mirzapur, the actors seemed very excited about the series. For most of them, this is a genre they have never explored before, as one of the writers of the web series Puneet Krishna rightly said that the actors look too good and innocent to play gangsters! Who would think that anyone would take Pankaj Tripathi seriously as a gangster? But he looks completely different from his usual characters in Mirzapur where he plays the lead character Kaleen bhaiya.
Here’s what the actors had to say about their roles and their experience of being a part of the series.
We’ve mostly seen Pankaj Tripathi playing the funny man and he’s brilliant at it but you will be surprised to see how well he has played the role of a gangster. Speaking about the role he said, “They had to constantly remind me that I was Kaleen bhaiya!”
Actor Ali Fazal who originally belongs to a place close to Mirzapur said,”I wouldn’t cast me for this part.It was very difficult to shoot this series. We’ve created a fictional world but it’s something people will relate to globally.”
Vikrant Massey who was one of the last ones to join this gang of gangsters said that he had not read a script like this in a long time. “It was an opportunity only a fool would miss.”
Divyendu Sharma who was in full form and pulling everyone’s leg said. Speaking about his character he said, “I think the credit goes to the writing. The way the writers have written the character it’s fascinating to discover a character like that. Munna is a troubled soul who wants to prove himself and tries too hard.”
Rasika Duggal whose looks were inspired from Meena Kumari’s look in Sahib Biwi Aur Gulaam plays Beena Tripathi, wife of ganglord Kaleen Bhaiya. Her character is said to be a desirable and daring one. “I don’t think roles like that are written for women,” said Rasika about her role. Adding to that Shweta Tripathi said, ”I think the women of Mirzapur figure out that guns are not the only way to show power. It’s all a mind game.”
While Shriya Pilgaonkar narrated how she had to ride a two-wheeler for the first time in her life and how she practiced for days to do it right.”I will be forever grateful to Mirzapur. I was always scared of two-wheelers but I took up the challenge and for a month I practiced and enjoyed that scene ao much. loading a gun was another thing I learnt but hope I never have to use it,” she said.
For television actress Harshita, this will be her first move from TV. Speaking about the same she said, “TV gets monotonous but digital series gives you a room for performance. It’s my first web series and I enjoyed it thoroughly.”
Amit Sial joked that he had actually auditioned for the role of Munna which eventually went to Divyendu. He said, “I didn’t get Munna coz I was not that cute. I enjoyed it and hopefully, the coming season will be fun too.”
The cast and crew indirectly announced that there will be a second season to the series. But before that go watch the first series of this very intense original gangster drama starting 16 November on Amazon Prime.
