As you might have known by now, the Supreme Court has passed a historic judgment by amending the centuries-old Section 377 ban and decriminalizing same-sex relationships in India on Thursday. Thousands have wholeheartedly cheered for the same, and people have marked the day as a progressive one for many reasons. Bollywood celebrities have extended their best wishes and greetings out to the LGBTQ community via their Twitter page – replacing hatred and discrimination with support and love.

Here’s what they have had to say –

Karan Johar was one of the celebrities to post a picture of the Pride Flag on his Twitter page with the caption that he was proud of India for decriminalizing homosexuality and doing away with Section 377 – terming it as a historic judgment.

Sonam Kapoor has posted a short but heartfelt message as well, as she says that this is the India that she wants to live in – one which is tolerant and acceptable of who we are and whom we want to love and be with for the rest of our lives.

Alia Bhatt has thanked the Supreme Court for their decision and has posted a picture of the Pride Flag as well with the caption “Love is Love”, meaning that love does not gender and homosexuality is something natural and should be accepted as it is.

Kalki Koechlin, who had played the role of a bisexual woman in her movie “Margarita With A Straw”, has tweeted that she thanks all the lawyers and other legal professionals who have helped to promote the normalcy of same-sex relationships as well.

Ayushmann Khurrana believes that the Section 377 amendment is the sign of a progressive India and that it was about time that the judgment was made.

Aamir Khan took a different take and posted a short video clip of an episode on “Accepting Alternative Sexualities” from the popular talk-show ‘Satyameva Jayate’. He ends his post mentioning that now that the judiciary has legalised same-sex love and relationships in India, it is time for us to accept and give equal rights to everyone regardless of their gender or sexual orientation.

Apart from a previous post expressing how this was a huge step forward, Anushka also shared a photo from her upcoming movie Sui Dhaaga with rainbow colored threads hanging to mark her greetings and approval of the verdict.

Apart from them, many other celebrities such as Richa Chaddha, Varun Dhawan, Swara Bhaskar, Hansal Mehta and Apurva Asrani (both of whom have directed and written the movie “Aligarh”) have also expressed their happiness at the scrapping of an outdated law.

As per the 1861 law, same-sex lovers could be punished for up to ten years in prison – which had been challenged by five petitioners. Now that the judgment has been made, we are all happy to accept love in all forms.
