Amruta Khanvilkar has been critically appreciated for her strong and sensitive depiction of Munira in Meghna Gulzar’s “Raazi” this year. Munira is Sehmat Khan’s sister-in-law, who loses her husband. She had to work on the dialogue, diction and accent as she had to fit into the character of an aristocratic Pakistani Muslim woman. Apart from Bollywood, Khanvilkar has also created a name in Marathi movies and is well-loved by the audience.

Khanvilkar was born on 23 November 1984 in Pune, Maharashtra to Raju and Gauri Khanvilkar. She began her acting career through the reality show “India’s Best Cine Star ki Khoj” in 2004, but was eliminated in the final round. She took this as an opportunity to bag a role in the Marathi movie “Golmaal” (2006), playing the double roles of Purva and Apurva. She entered Bollywood with Manoj Tyagi’s “Mumbai Salsa” (2007) as Neha, but could not establish herself as a lead actress. Soon, her career picked up and she started getting offers from various Marathi and Hindi movies such as “Phoonk” (2008), where she was nominated for the Award of “Exciting New Face” by Max Stardust Awards (2009).
After her brief period in Bollywood, she went back to work in regional cinema and earned a lot of love and respect from her audience. She made a comeback in Bollywood in an item song appearance in “Dhoka Dhoka” for the movie “Himmatwala” (2013), but went back to working for Marathi cinema for a long time after that.

The Marathi actress has proved her mettle on television as well, as she was the Winner in “Nach Baliye Season 7” with her husband Himmanshoo A. Malhotra and she also performed in “Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa” (both in 2015). She has also acted in the Hindi television drama “24” and “Comedy Nights Bachao” (both in 2016). She was the Judge of the Marathi dance reality show “2 MAD” and was the anchor of the Hindi dance reality show, “Dance India Dance Season 6” (both in 2017).
Speaking of her recent success in “Raazi”, Khanvilkar says that the whole shooting was a learning experience for her where she worked with stalwarts like Meghna Gulzar and Alia Bhatt, and had to learn Urdu to blend perfectly with her role in the movie. As for now, Khanvilkar has taken a few days off from work to enjoy the post-release success. Way to go girl!
