Maahi, MSD, captain cool; there are plenty of names by which he is known. Former Indian cricket team captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni is no doubt the most beloved cricketer in India right now. Apart from having won us the world cup, there are plenty more traits of Dhoni which have brought him immense appreciation over the years. Let us list them out for you.
Mind-blowing wicket keeping
Behind the stumps, Dhoni seemingly moves at light speed. He has created stumpings out of nothing on many occasions. His eyes are always on the batsman’s legs, and as soon as they exit the safe territory, Dhoni’s arms swoop in out of nowhere to claim the wicket. Sometimes, he doesn’t even need to see the stumps to hit bull’s-eye.
Clever stump mic clippings
Nothing’s funnier than some healthy banter being caught on the stump microphone, and with MS Dhoni, there’s plenty of that. Who can forget the line “udhar girlfriend nahi hai, idhar aaja thoda” he said to Sreeshanth. Or the “Ghanti baja de iski” comment made with reference to Ian Bell.
Overflowing Trophy Cabinet
The Ranchi lad has not only won us a World Cup, but also a World T20 title. That being said, he has one Champions Trophy title under his belt as well. Furthermore, a number one spot in the ICC Test Rankings is one more of his many achievements. And Chennaiyyans can never forget the two IPL titles that Dhoni has won them.
Cool as a Cucumber
Former India coach Gary Kirsten once said, “I would go to war with Dhoni by my side.” This is a testament to the immense calmness that captain cool brings to the table. Even in the direst of situations, there exists a determined yet tranquil look on his face, which surely affects the morale of his teammates the same way it affects us.
Out of the box thinking
No matter what, Dhoni’s mind is always involved in the game. His Sherlock-like brain sometimes comes up with unique and unexpected bowling and fielding changes. These might get ridiculed if some other captain does them, but with Dhoni, we always know a lot of thinking has gone behind them and that they will most certainly pay off. And they do almost 90 percent of the time.
Remember the decision to give Joginder Sharma the final over in the World T20 match which won us the cup.
Numbers Do The Talking
He recently made a century of half centuries in international cricket. But that’s just one of the many astounding statistics of a player who has been batting so lower down the order for so many years. He is almost about to complete 10000 ODI runs, and even after playing more than 300 matches, he has maintained an average of more than 50 which is nothing short of incredible. Add to that the fact that he has the most ODI stumpings ever and is also the most successful Indian captain ever.
Awesome personal life
Lastly, we just cannot have enough of Dhoni’s personal life, can we? His collection of motorbikes is no secret, and same goes for his love for dogs. We saw his life’s story in his biopic, and were blown away by it. And now, we’re always on the lookout for some sweet Instagram pictures of his daughter Ziva.
Like all of you out there, we dread the fact that one day MD Dhoni will have to retire from cricket. Let’s hope we get to see him play for a many more years.
